Lifelong Changes

I'm often asked if diets such as the latest low-carb diet or a low-fat diet or a diet-of-the-moment works, my answer is that "yes, you will most likely lose weight on that diet". However, the reason that the diet industry is staying in business, is that most do not produce lifelong changes in eating behavior. Moreover, most only "recommend" exercise. So since I have all of you for the long haul, I'd like everyone to start sharing what they believe to be lifelong changes that they have made since starting the program. I really want you to give this some thought and think about what you are going to do for LIFE in terms of conscious eating and exercise.

  1. I pretty much quit looking at this as a project and more as a lifelong commitment. Did you read the paper today? One of your former students wrote a letter to the editor about the program, and he mentioned that you have to look at this as a new way of living instead of just a one-time goal. That's what I've been trying to do. So when I miss a night of exercise, or indulge in something not so healthy, I don't beat myself up about it because it is what it is. Then I just go on and get back on. I stopped thinking of food as bad or good but rather efficient or inefficient. For a LIFE plan, I plan to keep myself and my body a priority and treat it as well as I'd treat my child - which is GOOD, he'll tell you. When you give yourself that priority and that status, it's easier to allocate the time and effort towards it. This is a tough question, but definitely one to continue thinking about.

  2. I've learned to really look at what I'm doing. I have found that it is so easy to slide back into old eating habits and I look forward to the day that the new eating habits become the norm. It hasn't happened yet and I've kind of backslid. I'm in the process now of realigning what I'm doing. I've worked too hard to go backwards. Look forward to seeing you all next week.
